The origin server is the first server in CDN. The clients are pushing content to the origin server. The selection of the origin server is based on the geographical location. In simply the origin is the server where the content resides.

So if an end-user puts in a request for live content from the US, a CDN will deliver it from the closest server to minimize bandwidth requirements and provide the smoothest video stream possible.
