Encrypt every HLS segment with AES-128 on 5centsCDN. A downloaded segment is unusable without the key, and any standard HLS player handles it with no changes.
Plays in any standard HLS player, with no SDK and no DRM vendor.
AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encrypts each segment of your HLS stream with a key. HLS supports AES-128 encryption, so a player can only show the video if it can fetch the matching key. A segment pulled off the wire or copied from cache is unusable on its own.
Any HLS-compliant player reads the EXT-X-KEY line in the manifest, fetches the key, and decrypts segments in memory during playback, invisibly to the viewer. The stream is still delivered as ordinary HLS files; those files are just scrambled without the key.
In practice, security depends less on the cipher than on protecting the key. Serve it over HTTPS from a gated endpoint, and put a secure token in front of the key URL so it can't be fetched by just anyone.
Signed links, AES encryption and Multi-DRM build on each other. Start with the level your content needs and step up when it needs more.
Just stopping hotlinking? Secure tokens are enough. Protecting premium content? Step up to Multi-DRM.
Same encode step, same player. The file just stops being usable on its own.
AES-128 HLS is a standard, not a proprietary format. Any HLS-compliant player reads the EXT-X-KEY line, fetches the key and plays, with no SDK to add.
The cipher is the easy part. These controls keep the key in the right hands.
Every media segment is encrypted as your video is packaged.
The key is served from an authenticated, HTTPS-only endpoint, not alongside the segments.

Setup is a toggle, not an integration. Turn on AES-128 for your zone, then encode and deliver as usual.
One setting on your zone, applied when your video is encoded and packaged. No SDK to add and no new pipeline.
Encrypted HLS is cached and served from the edge like any other stream.
